BMW has announced its intention to release a serious competitor to the Tesla S in 2018 based on the long wheelbase BMW 5 Series. The vehicle hasn’t been given a public name yet, but likely, it will be referred to as the i5 or i7.
The vehicle’s energy will stem from an efficient plug-in hybrid driver-train, containing “a gasoline-burning four-cylinder mounted in the engine bay and two electric motors located over the rear axle.” Under the passenger compartment rests a battery pack, allowing the Tesla rival to operate for 80 miles on just electricity.
According to Automobile, BMW will debut the vehicle’s concept at a major auto show in 2017, leading to a probable public release in the year following. Additionally, they state that the i5 (or i7) will sit at a hefty base price of about $100,000.
