If you’re anything like us at JMK BMW, you’ve got tunnel vision. There’s one thing on your immediate radar that has stolen your attention, your imagination, and—truly—your heart. We’re referring of course to the upcoming 2014 BMW i8, which may very well be the coolest thing manufactured since sliced bread. Given the fact that sliced bread in and of itself is not particularly cool, that means the i8 is most certainly what the kids these days call “that hotness.”
That’s why we are elated to report that BMW has confirmed that production for the plug-in hybrid sports car will get underway this June. Along with this news comes a bit of the ol’ good news/bad news.
The good news first? Okay, here goes: according to Auto Blog, BMW’s early projections that the i8 would achieve 94 MPGe were quite a bit off. Now, we’re not talking off in the way that other automakers are off (like particular brands who can’t seem to help themselves when it comes to fibbing about fuel figures). Rather, BMW underestimated the BMW i8’s potential: the new figures presented by Reuters suggest the i8 will get up to 112 MPGe. Yes, please!
Unfortunately, here’s the bad news: you’re probably going to be saying please for a while. The i8 has outstripped its supply already, meaning that the entire first wave is essentially spoken for. What this means for those who haven’t already pre-ordered the i8, we cannot say for certain. But it’s fair to guess you’ve got a nice little wait ahead of you. On the upside: so worth it.
