While it was early in the morning here in the United States, the Frankfurt Motor Show was well underway in Germany. BMW capitalized on this and showed off the much anticipated i8 plug-in hybrid sportscar. The i8 is a swan-wing-doored coupe and it is a beauty.
The BMW i8 has a 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine that alone produces 231 horsepower and 236 pound-feet of torque. It then runs to the rear wheels by a six-speed automatic transmission while an electric motor sends 131 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque through a two-speed automatic to the front wheels. The total system produces 362 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque which allows the i8 to reach 62 mph in only 4.4 seconds. The i8 has an estimated fuel economy of 94 miles per gallon which makes it efficient and fast.
Now, you’re probably wondering about the charge huh? The charging for the i8 is also impressively fast having a full charge in less than 4 hours coming from 110-volt outlet. If you are at a BMW Charging Station the full charge will take only an hour and a half!
The i8 doesn’t come at a cheap price and ranks as BMW’s second most expensive member of the family starting at $135,700. The i8 will arrive to the United States this spring 2014.
