With only a few months left before it makes its debut, the
BMW i sub-brand comes to focus. Coming later this year will be the
electric-focused division that will launch what has been called the BMW i3. The
BMW i3 will first be unveiled as a five-door model and the coupe model will
follow later. The coupe model is based on the i3 Coupe Concept that BMW
revealed last year.
According to a source that is close to Autocar, BMW believes
there to be a potential in offering mid-size cars in the i brand line. The
source was quoted saying “There are a lot of unused numbers in the i line-up
and there is the potential for other mid-sized concepts”.
BMW sees the i3 and i8 to be the bookends of the i line-up
which leaves plenty of room for a variety of electric or hybrid vehicles. The source from Autocar also said “With the
i3 you have a megacity vehicle that offers zero emissions and a focus on
practicality, while the i8 is an all-out sports car that demonstrates the
extreme performance that’s possible using this technology”.
Both the i3 and i8 will be debuted in 2014.
